This was conducted through a randomised controlled trial, in which 160 patients who underwent ACLR were randomly assigned to either a standard or an accelerated rehabilitation protocol. Isokinetic concentric quadriceps strength and the performance of the SLH test were assessed before surgery, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 months after ACLR.
Results revealed that patients randomized to an accelerated rehabilitation protocol had significantly better strength and hop LSI scores than those assigned the standard rehabilitation protocol. Furthermore, the accelerated group experienced greater range of motion (ROM) improvements as well as greater knee extension than nonaccelerated individuals.
Though more research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of an accelerated protocol for improving strength, this appears to be a promising alternative to traditional rehab protocols. Furthermore, this approach can also be utilized with other soft tissue injuries in order to accelerate healing time and reduce scar tissue formation.
